Pratt AR Project

AR Effect

Project Overview

This project is an AR (Augmented Reality) public artwork created for the Pratt Institute campus, displayed on the construction barrier surrounding a historic steam engine that has been undergoing renovation for over two years. The steam engine is one of the oldest and most meaningful artifacts on campus, dating back to Pratt’s early days. As the restoration continues, this AR installation remains a part of the campus landscape, enriching the space with an interactive digital experience.

Concept & Design

The visual design of the barrier fabric was inspired by the Pratt Digital Arts Department building. To engage viewers, a QR code is integrated into the design—when scanned using a smartphone camera, users are instantly directed to an Instagram effect page.

Through AR, a small yellow robot with a Pratt logo on its chest emerges from the building, interacts playfully with users on their screens, and then returns to its original position. This adorable, animated character symbolizes the innovation and technological creativity of Pratt’s Digital Arts Department, bringing a touch of interactivity and storytelling to the physical campus environment.

Impact

By blending digital art with real-world architecture, this installation transforms a simple construction barrier into a dynamic and immersive experience, making the ongoing renovation site an engaging landmark on campus. The project showcases how AR technology can enhance public spaces, fostering interaction and curiosity among students, faculty, and visitors.
